Appomattox Court House and Petersburg
The picture on the left is of Appomattox Court House where Grant and Lee battle desparately for control over the small city of Petersburg – the vital railway hub for the confederate capital – Richmond. Grant repeatedly attempts to encircle the city and, after nine months of bloodshed, he completes the encirclement. Lee’s starving army tries to escape, heading west toward Appomattox Court House where they are finally surrounded and forced to surrender.
