Civil War

Union Flag

Picture
The Union had multiple flags throughout the Civil War. The picture on the left was the Union flag at the beginning of the war. The flag changed three times due to the states that entered the Union during the Civil War causing a new star to be added each time. The first flag had 33 stars on it. Then on January 29, 1861 Kansas entered the Union which meant that there were 34 stars on the flag. Next on June 20, 1863 West Virginia admitted to the Union. At the start of the war it was originally a part of Virginia, but the civilians in the mountainous part of Virginia disagreed with their secession. The Yankee flag then had 35 stars on it. Last, on October 30, 1864 Nevada became the 36th star on the flag. Although this was not until near the end of the war more states would be coming to join the Union soon after. The flag located below is what the Yankee flag looked like towards the end of the war.
