These battles are famous because General Ulysses S. Grant also known as US Grant forced an "unconditional surrender". The Confederates at this battle asked for a "conditional surrender" but Grant said the only surrender or agreement that could be made was an immediate and unconditional surrender, the Confederates did surrender. These battles started the Union control of the Mississippi River. This was a Union victory.
