Union Strategy

Picture
The strategy of the North is known as the Anaconda Plan. This brilliant plan was created by General Winfield Scott who was a hero from the war with Mexico. His goal had three main strategies in order for the Union to succeed. The first step was that the Union should blockade all Southern ports. By doing this it would prevent supplies from reaching the CSA and the CSA chipping supplies to Britain and France. Second, the Union needed to gain complete control of the Mississippi River causing the Confederacy to split in two. Last, the North needed to capture Richmond, the Confederate capitol located in Virginia. This was called the Anaconda Plan because it was named after the snake that slowly squeezes its prey to death.
