Civil War

Confederate Uniforms

Picture
The Confederates never had an official color during the Civil War unlike the Union whose main color was navy blue. The South had a lack of factories since they only produced crops like cotton. All of the factories and industries were located in the Union at this time. The most commonly known color for the rebels is gray. The next most common or popular color was light brown. A nickname given to the rebels due to their uniform colors was Butternuts. The soldiers typically wore jackets down to their waist made of heavy cotton or longer jackets like in the picture. Both sides had pins, buttons, and symbols that represented a soldier’s rank. For pants they often wore heavy cotton pants that were gray.
