Union Women

Women wanted become nurses or surgeons to help the sick and wounded during the war. However, many doctors did not want them, but with enough protest women were eventually able to become nurses and surgeons during the Civil War. 

Mary Edwards Walker

Around the age of 29 Mary became an assistant surgeon. In 1863 she was assigned to the 52nd Ohio Infantry in Tennessee. Later in the war she was captured and remained a prisoner for four months until she was finally traded with other Union doctors for Confederate doctors. She was the first woman army surgeon and received the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Clara Barton

Clara is famous for many things that she did during the Civil War. First, she founded the American Red Cross. Next she is known for helping the wounded soldiers and is known to be one of the best nurses throughout the Civil War.

Harriet Tubman

After fleeing from Maryland where she was born into slavery she helped other slaves throughout the Civil War. The Underground Railroad was not actually underground, but helped slaves escape from the South get to the North. She was the conductor of the Underground Railroad as well as an abolitionist.
