South Economy

Picture
The states on the map that are shaded in with green represent all of the southern states that seceded. The South had a harder time than the North with all of the costs and shortages of food in the South. Since the war took place in the South many of the farmlands, agricultural land, and railroad lines were destroyed. They could not import or export since Union blockades surrounded every port. Bread riots, hungary people took it to the streets with protests and sometimes violence, were common in the South. Last, inflation caused many citizens to call on the Confederate leaders for help.
