Although the balloons used during the Civil War aren’t the same as the hot air balloons
used today they have much in common. During the Civil War they were used for
spying on enemy camps or troop movements. The balloons were attached to rope so
that the soldiers in the balloon’s basket could be taken back down. In order to prevent them from being popped by gunfire they floated to a high altitude.
