The flag on the left is most commonly known flag for the Confederacy during the Civil
War. However, like the Union they too had multiple flags during the war. The
first flag was created when Mississippi, the second state to secede with South
Carolina, seceded and it represented the unity of spirit and an expression of
nationalism and independence. This flag came to be known as the Bonnie Blue Flag
because a man named Harry McCarty wrote a song about it.

This flag is known as the First National Flag for the Confederacy and lasted from
about 1861 to 1863. However, this flag was never completely approved or voted on
by the Confederate Congress. This flag lasted for two years in the Confederacy.
The civilians and army commanders did not like this flag. They thought that it
was too similar to the Union’s flag. In the spring of 1862 a new flag was being designed.

This flag is known as the main Confederate flag or the Second National Flag and was used from about 1863 to 1865. Since nobody in the South agreed with the First National flag army commanders started displaying their own flags in battles. This was the most common in army commanders and specifically assigned by the Confederate Congress to the Army of Northern Virginia. This flag could as be seen flying over government buildings in the South.

Rogers, according to him the red stripe symbolized fortitude and courage. Also the stripe of red was taken from the French flag that symbolized the decency of southerners. He also said that the white symbolized purity and innocence.
